Listen, I’m a HUGE Terminator fan. Terminator 2: Judgement Day is one of my favorite movies of all time and I’ve recently started collecting Terminator action figures and collectibles. I just love it so much!
But ever since they started doing further sequels in this franchise, I haven’t been impressed with any of them. The only one I kinda like is Terminator Salvation. So when they announced Terminator 6, I was of course very skeptical. I’ve been a little more excited ever since it was announced that Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger would return. But I know that doesn’t guarantee this movie will be good.
Today, the first teaser trailer was released for the film and I’m having mixed feelings. So let’s do a breakdown!
By the way, check out my list of the most anticipated movies of 2019!
Sarah Connor and the T-800 are back
Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger are both back! I’m so excited to see them in another Terminator movie together.
Sarah Connor looks to be fighting for the resistance again! I knew she’d be back for this movie, but I still wasn’t ready when she stepped out of that truck looking so badass in her tactical gear! 😃That moment took me back to Terminator 2.
And of course the T-800 is back, but he’s looking much older. We all know the original T-800 Model 1 was destroyed at the end of Terminator 2. So is this another T-800 or is it someone (or something) else? If he is the T-800, he appears to be hiding out from someone or something.
I’ve read that they’re using CGI to make the characters look younger for certain “flashback” scenes, so I’m REALLY excited to see what those are about.
A new *highly* advanced Terminator
I can’t even tell you how excited I got when I heard that Gabriel Luna was the new Terminator. I loved him so much as Ghost Rider on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and I’m so pumped to see him in this! I don’t think anyone could top Arnold Schwarzenegger and Robert Patrick in the first two films (Robert was especially terrifying in T2), but I’m still excited to see Gabriel step into this role.
Apparently this new Terminator has the ability to split into both an endoskeleton and a liquid metal form. In the teaser there’s a really insane scene where he’s jumping from one plane to another in the sky. I don’t wanna judge it too harshly just yet since this is just a trailer, so I’ll just say scenes like this could be so cringey if they don’t pull it off just right. We’ll see.
A familiar plot
What we know about the plot so far seems pretty familiar. Two robots (?) fighting over a single person who is vital to the future.
We have Mackenzie Davis playing a character named Grace. She’s some kind of cyborg/hybrid fighting to protect Dani Ramos from the new Terminator, although it’s unclear exactly why just yet. At one point in the teaser, Grace says “We win by keeping you alive,” so yeah Dani is pretty important.
Sarah assumes that Grace is a Terminator and tells her she looks almost human, but she says she is human. So I’m guessing that although Grace is not fully human, she this or feels like she is. I’m sure we’ll go on that journey of self-discovery with her throughout the film.
Dark Fate reportedly takes place after The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, ignoring the other sequels in the franchise. But since Sarah and the T-800 are much older and John is apparently absent, I’m really curious to see what happened leading up to it.
Overall I love the cast and the fact that both Arnold and Linda are back. The fight scenes look pretty good and all but it feels like they went a little overkill on the CGI. I was really hoping for more of those almost-horror types of scenes that really made me fall in love with the original movies, but they seem to be missing. I’m hoping the full trailer will make me feel better about it. But I definitely plan to see it no matter what.
Terminator: Dark Fate will be in theaters November 1st!
