I had never heard of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline before they announced they were making the movie, but I was so interested in the premise that I decided to read it. I loved the book, it was so delightfully geeky and I loved all of the pop culture references.
If you don’t know what the book or movie is about, here’s the basic idea: In the year 2045, where people spend most of their time inside a simulation game called The Oasis, a boy (username Parzival) teams up with his friends to go up against a company called IOI to win a contest where the prize is complete control over the entire system. The movie was directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Lena Waithe, and Simon Pegg.
This week I finally saw the movie and it was so much fun. I mean, the visuals are freaking AMAZING. I saw it in 3D (which I don’t normally do, idk it just feels like overkill for most movies) and it definitely enhanced the experience for me.
As amazing as the imagery was, I did feel like there were some minor issues. The plot was very rushed — in the beginning and throughout the rest of the movie though, I kept thinking, “Wow, I’m glad I read the book because otherwise I’d have no idea what was going on.” I guess if they took the time to really go into detail the movie would probably be 4 hours long. But those details were what made the book so much fun to read.
I also felt like I missed the “quest” feeling that the book had (again, details). In the book, it was like you were figuring it all out along with Parzival and taking this epic quest with him — checking the scoreboard, digging for clues, trying to stay a step ahead of IOI. For me it was the heart of the book and the feeling was somehow missing from the movie.
But overall it was a lot of fun and I like how it turned out! Now, I’m sharing some of my favorite Easter Eggs from the movie.
Spoilers: This listing itself is spoiler-free, but if you don’t want to know any of the Easter Eggs before you’ve seen the movie then you probably shouldn’t read on.
1. The Iron Giant
The Iron Giant replica built by Aech was one of my favorite things about the movie! As shown in the trailer, Iron Giant is part of a battle scene and it’s really awesome to watch.
2. The Shining
There is a hilarious part of the movie with an ode to the movie The Shining. This scene is not in the book but it’s probably my favorite of the movie.
3. Star Trek
I haven’t seen this one listed in many articles, which is crazy to me! There is a funeral scene in the movie with flowers in the shape of Star Trek symbols. I snorted.
In the race scene, Parzival drives a DeLorean like in Back to the Future!
5. Child’s Play
There is a part where Chucky from Child’s Play randomly appears and it’s pretty funny.
Other cool stuff in the movie:
- King Kong
- Freddy Krueger
- Batman, Wonder Woman, The Joker, Harley Quinn
Have you seen the movie? What were your favorite Easter Eggs?
