Happy New Year! 2017 is gone and I’m happily looking forward to 2018, mostly to get a fresh start with the new year but also because there are so many more awesome shows and movies coming (and returning).
When looking at what’s coming up for TV shows this year, I noticed some really interesting selections coming within the next 2 months alone. So here are a few new shows coming in early 2018 that I’m excited to try!
This show actually premieres tonight and I’m so excited about it! Grown-ish is a spin-off of the show Black-ish, which follows Zoey after she goes off to college.
It stars Yara Shahidi (who is just adorable) but also Francia Raisa, Trevor Jackson, Deon Cole, and Chris Parnell. It even has R&B singers Chloe x Halle as recurring stars. And of course Anthony Anderson Tracee Ellis Ross will be on occasionally as guest stars. I love a good YA show. I’ll definitely be watching! Premieres January 3rd on Freeform
2. Black Lightning
Black Lightning is set to premiere on the CW and become one of the first black superhero shows (Marvel’s Luke Cage premiered in 2016!). It’s based on the DC character of the same name, Jefferson Pierce aka Black Lightning. He is a retired superhero who becomes a vigilante for justice.
Since it’s on The CW I was a little concerned at first. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of the Arrowverse shows, but I don’t think we need any more shows in that universe! This show is not part of the Arrowverse at all, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do with it. I’m also really excited to see China Anne McClain in a new show. Premieres January 16th on The CW
3. The Alienist
The Alienist is a period psychological thriller drama (already sounds interesting) based on the novel of same name by Caleb Carr. Set in 1896, a criminal psychologist – aka alienist – and newspaper illustrator John Moore to conduct the investigation of a series of gruesome murders. It stars Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning.
I honestly don’t know if I can even stomach the premise of this show. If you know me, you know I love the horror, thriller, and mystery genres, so I’ll at least try it out. Premieres January 22nd on TNT
4. Altered Carbon
Altered Carbon is a new sci-fi Netflix series starring Joel Kinnaman! It’s based on the book by Richard K. Morgan and takes place in a future where the human mind can now be digitized and downloaded into a “cortical stack” and placed into new bodies, called sleeves.
This is going to be super weird but I’m in. Premieres February 2nd on Netflix
5. Seven Seconds
Seven Seconds is a Netflix anthological crime drama that explores human stories behind headlines. The first season follows events after a black teenager is run over by a white police officer, which leads to a cover-up as racial tensions explode.
This show will probably be very heavy and dark but I’m interested to see how it’ll turn out. Premieres February 23rd on Netflix
6. Good Girls
Good Girls is a dramedy about 3 suburban mothers who find themselves in desperate circumstances and decide to stop playing it safe and risk everything to take their power back. It stars Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman, and Retta.
I’m not sure about this one, since I’m generally not a fan of NBC. But I may give it a try based on the cast alone. Premieres February 26th on NBC
