Today we got the first teaser trailer for Black Widow, the very first film in Phase 4 of the MCU.
The movie was directed by Cate Shortland and stars David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle, and Rachel Weisz alongside Scarlett Johansson. It appears to take place sometime before Natasha’s death in Avengers: Endgame (According to Forbes, it takes place before the Snap).
I have to say it feels very odd (and about 10 years late!) to take a step back and revisit this character that has already died at such a pivotal point in the MCU timeline. I’m not a comic reader so I have no insight on what this could possibly mean or what could come of this. But I do hope that there’s a reason for it and we’re not just getting this movie as an afterthought just because she was one of the only one of the original Avengers without a solo project (Hawkeye has a television show coming soon) or to fill a blank space in the schedule. At least give me some good post-credit scenes!
The teaser trailer looks really good, although I wish it was a bit grittier. But obviously I don’t think Marvel is quite ready to make an R-rated MCU movie, which is what I think it would take to tell the kind of action thriller that I’d most love to see.
But I’m hoping that if Black Widow is a big success, it’ll give Marvel yet another big reason (behind Captain Marvel) to invest in more of their female characters. I always look forward to the high quality, female-led action thrillers that we only seem to get a few times a year. We need more!
Black Widow is in theaters May 1, 2020!
