After 10 years (and for you OG Marvel comic fans, much longer than that) and 18 films, Marvel finally released part 1 of their Avengers finale, Avengers: Infinity War! It broke the world record for the highest opening weekend ever, with a staggering $250+ million dollars at the box office in its opening weekend in the US alone. Yeah, Marvel is killing it!
I took a few days to collect my thoughts (I’m still collecting them, tbh) and now I’m sharing some of my favorite things about the movie. There are some mild spoilers here (it’s very hard to talk about this movie without spoilers), but they won’t ruin the movie for you if you haven’t seen it yet.
1. First-time meets and team-ups
It was so much fun seeing all of our favorite characters from the past 10 years of Marvel movies come together, many of them meeting for the first time ever. I was excited to see how their team dynamics would work, since they’re all so different, and of course I was not disappointed! One of my favorite team-ups was Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Thor is the perfect mix of funny and serious and his interactions with Star-Lord were just hilarious. And of course, it’s always funny seeing Tony Stark interact with anyone, since he’s such a smartass, so I loved seeing him butt heads with Dr. Strange. Another one of my favorite team-ups was one that I really wish we got to see more of, and it was the all girl scene featuring Okoye, Black Widow, and Scarlet Witch. It was way too short. I NEED MORE.
2. Funny moments
I don’t know why, but I was actually surprised at how funny the movie was. All of the previous movies in the MCU have had plenty of humor in them, but I expected this one to be more serious. And while it was definitely serious at times, there were also so many one-liners that I couldn’t stop talking about after the movie. I really can’t even pick a favorite funny moment. 😆 The humor, as usual in MCU movies, was very natural and didn’t feel forced at all. The characters are just being themselves and interacting with each other and it works so well. Oddly, it balances the movie out, because the funny moments seem to be sandwiched between the really dark moments.
3. Surprises and Easter Eggs
There were lots of surprises in Infinity War! First of all, some of the things we saw in the trailers didn’t actually happen in this movie, and some of the things we thought would happen didn’t happen the way we thought. 😭 There were also characters missing, who I assume will show up in the next Avengers movie? Including one with no explanation at all (we’re just left to assume why she’s not there). There was a new character played by a very recognizable actor (I heard people saying his name when he came on screen). And then there was the return of some characters we haven’t seen in a while (including one we haven’t seen in several years). The post-credits scene had a nice Easter Egg as well. That’s one of the many things Marvel is so good at — keeping us fans on the edge of our seats!
4. Lots of action
The action scenes were outstanding! The Avengers put their powers and skills to use like never before. Thanos is the ultimate villain, and while collecting the Infinity Stones he becomes more and more powerful, so it takes everything they have to fight him. This makes for some really interesting and complex fight scenes. The big battle scene at Wakanda is probably my favorite action scene, because we have all of these characters using their abilities at the same time and working together.
Just a few highlights: In this movie we also get to see Iron Man and Spider-Man using tech we haven’t previously seen, Dr. Strange doing more magic in this movie than I think we saw in his entire solo movie (and it was so cool), and Captain America is putting his new shield to work. And there was a particular scene with Thor that was so badass.
5. The villain
It’s weird to put the villain on a list of things I loved about the movie, because I definitely don’t love Thanos as a character. But I did really enjoy him as a villain. As evil as he was, killing in the name of “balancing” the universe, I hate to admit I actually understand why he’s doing it. He’s super powerful and he’s believable because we know he’s been planning this for so long. He’s not so one-dimensional like many villains tend to be, and although it sucked for our heroes, he actually had some pretty kickass scenes. To me, he is one of Marvel’s best villains, along with Killmonger, Hela, and a few others.
Needless to say, this movie ended on a HUGE, insane cliffhanger and I can’t wait to see what he’ll do next. As hard as it’s been so far for the Avengers to take down Thanos, I’m pretty sure the fight is far from over.
This movie blew my mind and left me feeling so sad, hopeful, worried, happy, excited, and just overall bittersweet (I can’t believe it’s over!) at the same time. But I loved every second of it. Have you seen it? No spoilers, but what were some of your favorite things about it?
