I’m not a big football fan but I like to watch the Super Bowl with my husband. This year’s Super Bowl came with a win for the Kansas City Chiefs, an explosive half-time show with Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, some exciting trailers for upcoming movies/shows, and my favorite part – the commercials.
This year, the commercials cost a reported average of $5.6 million for a 30-second spot. Yikes. And while some ads left me wondering why the company would waste so much money on a recycled or uninspired commercial, the ones below were my top favorites!
1. Rocket Mortgage – Jason Momoa
This was by far my favorite commercial of the night! It was hilarious, watching Jason walk through the house “taking off” parts of himself to get more comfortable. ?And the bit at the end with Lisa Bonet had me cackling.
2. Walmart – Famous Visitors
Walmart did a fantastic job this year, using several movie references to advertise their Pickup service. Commercials like this are so fun, trying to point out as many as you can! My husband and I really loved this one.
3. Mountain Dew – The Shining
Mountain Dew’s ad featuring Bryan Cranston as Jack and Tracee Ellis Ross as Wendy in The Shining was creepy and awesome. Fun fact: I saw The Shining for the first time a couple of months ago. ?
4. Doritos – Cool Ranch
I think we’re all pretty much over the “Old Town Road” craze, but Doritos apparently didn’t get the memo? Whatever, this was a cute commercial and I loved when the horse danced. ??♀️
5. Jeep – Groundhog Day
It was so much fun watching Bill Murray spoof his own movie with some of his co-stars from Groundhog Day in this Jeep ad. And the groundhog was a adorable.
6. Genesis – Going Away Party
I loved this one! The gag about different kinds of people at a party was pretty funny. John and Chrissy were so cute and the car looked amazing.
7. Hyundai – Smaht Pahk
Hyundai’s Smaht Pahk commercial was one of the most effective and pretty funny. We get it! By the way, I loved seeing John Krasinski and Chris Evans in a commercial together.
8. Reese’s – Take 5
This commercial was so corny to me until the end with the “head up your ass” reference. I loved it.
9. Bud Light Seltzer – Post Malone
I’m not a Post Malone or Bud Light fan, but this ad with him stumbling around a convenience store while his brain tries to pick a version of Bud Light was so funny.
10. Google – Loretta
And last, but not least, Google’s tearjerker commercial featuring an elderly man talking about his favorite memories of his wife, Loretta. The way he emotionally recalled specific memories from their life together and asked Google to remember them was so touching. I’m not sure who would actually want tell Google things like this, since it feels kinda creepy, but whatever – it’s a good commercial.
5 of the the worst 2020 Super Bowl ads
Planters – All of that hype about killing off Mr. Peanut, only for them to literally say, “just kidding!” Dumb.
TurboTax – This one tried way too hard to be funny.
Winona in Winona – I missed the point, I guess? I was hoping there would be more to it.
Facebook – I rolled my eyes at this commercial. Are any of these groups even real?
NFL – The ad itself was very emotional and well done. But after the way the NFL handled the Colin Kaepernick / kneeling controversy, putting their brand name on an ad about police brutality felt pretty tone deaf and disingenuous.
What were your favorite (and least favorite) Super Bowl commercials this year?
